Surge Protection

In a rural environment abounding with trees, momentary interruptions of power may occur. Other reasons for this momentary high voltage condition may be cars hitting power poles causing lines to touch, lightning striking PUD 3 equipment (such as poles, transformers, etc.), large motors and welders being turned on and off, or static electricity in and around the home.

Some excessive voltage on power lines is a common occurrence. The problem is that today's homes contain sophisticated electronic equipment, which is sensitive to electrical surges. Many new products incorporate microprocessors, remote controls and digital time displays that need smooth power at all times. The most common home electronic products that need protection are: TVs, VCRs, DVD players, stereo equipment, garage door openers, satellite receivers, home security systems, cordless phones and answering machines, microwaves and computers.

A power surge lasts only a fraction of a second, but without proper protection your electronic equipment could be damaged.

The PUD strongly recommends surge protection for all equipment, which could be damaged by temporary voltage surges. Some surge protectors offer replacement coverage for equipment damaged while properly plugged into them.
